Character and Citizenship Education @ Pei Hwa
Philosophy
Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) is integral to the holistic development of students. The CCE curriculum supports the students’ development of values, character, citizenship dispositions and social-emotional well-being, with the aim of realising the school’s vision of developing Future-Ready Learners and Forward-Looking Leaders.
Curriculum
Overview
The CCE curriculum provides invaluable lessons and learning experiences to help our students internalise and practise good values and skills as well as develop competencies that are critical to character and citizenship development.
Through CCE, our staff will facilitate students’ thinking to help them make responsible decisions based on sound values, and guide them in becoming caring individuals and useful citizens.
Components in CCE
The Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) will emphasise the interconnectedness of values, knowledge, skills and competencies taught in these areas:

Weekly CCE Lessons
In the weekly CCE lessons, teachers use students’ life experiences to form possible contexts for the delivery of CCE, so that students can better retain the knowledge, skills and values taught. Through the facilitation of discussions and reflections during CCE lessons, teachers facilitate students’ learning of knowledge, values and skills for character development.
Values in Action (VIA)
Values in Action (VIA) are learning experiences that support students’ development as socially responsible citizens who contribute meaningfully to the community, through the learning and application of values, knowledge and skills. VIA fosters students’ ownership in how they can contribute to the community. Students have the opportunity to reflect on their experiences, the values they put into practice and how they can continue to contribute meaningfully.
Students participate in VIA programmes through the school’s Learning for Life Programme.

National Education (NE)
National Education (NE) forms an integral part of MOE’s comprehensive educational approach, empowering students with valuable avenues to delve into their unique national identity as proud Singaporeans. NE fosters a deep understanding and strong appreciation of Singapore and encourages responsible global citizenship. We aim to inspire students to work together in shaping our nation's future and contribute to Singapore's ongoing progress.
Through NE, we aim to develop citizenship dispositions in our students. The citizenship dispositions are: A Sense of Belonging, A Sense of Reality, A Sense of Hope and The Will to Act. To achieve these dispositions, we encourage students to discuss Singapore’s contemporary realities through issues and to engage in learning experiences to immerse themselves in the culture and art of Singapore, and also in other areas such as our geography and history.
NE is delivered through CCE lessons and student development experiences such as the NE Commemorative Days and Cohort Learning Journey.
Education and Career Guidance (ECG)
ECG focuses on nurturing students’ self-awareness and self-directedness for lifelong learning and enabling students to explore viable education and career options through equipping them with accurate and comprehensive information. ECG helps students to develop a growth mindset and a resilient attitude to embrace future opportunities as well as an appreciation for different career pathways.
ECG is delivered through classroom learning and student development experiences such as talks by post-secondary education institutions, career talks and learning journeys.
Students who would like to discover their values, interests, personalities and strengths as well as explore and make informed decisions about their post-secondary education pathway may also book an appointment for ECG Counselling with the ECG Counsellor.
